The Chapel of the White Light
A sacred piece of art on the Pitztal glacier
The famous Tyrolean artist Professor Rudi Wach created his ‘chapel of the white light’ at a point just a few minutes’ walk from the Kristall glacier restaurant.
About the chapel
Professor Wach’s idea was to create a building that is a sculpture. To bring his chapel concept to life, he used 180 individual components of Carrara granite, which are attached to a stainless steel construction built using completely new construction techniques. The artistic treatment of the slabs of Carrara granite was done with a diamond chain especially made for this purpose. The work of art reaches a height of 8,5 m and stretches out into the glacier world of the Pitztal.
The altar alone, created from the same material, weighs 975 kg and appears in different nuances of light due to special windows.
The massive entrance, made of titanium, renders additional importance to the total work of art.
The chapel of the white light is generally regarded as a gem in the Tyrolean Alps. It is a highlight, not just for visitors who are interested in art and architecture, and was consciously chosen as a contrast to the main rocks of the mountain peaks. Wach himself feels that he realised a highlight of his current creative period as a sculptor in this work and “had to enter into a competition with the surrounding mountain sculptures with a creative idea”.
About the artist
Professor Rudi Wach, an artist living in Milan, has caused quite a stir time and again with his work during the last decades. Some of his controversial artwork includes a depiction of Christ in Innsbruck (discussions about a representative location are still continuing), a marble duct that seems to flow like water in the white chapel of the University Hospital in Innsbruck, and the artwork in the subway terminal of the Vienna Museum Quarter, which features large-format sketches and sculptures.
Wach traced new artistic forms to show the hidden power of shapes and space and aims at uniting the spirit, art and craft skills. He has had many exhibitions in Austria, Italy and the USA.
